The Space to Listen

We live in a time of constant guidance.

It arrives through books, podcasts, videos, courses, articles, conversations. Almost every part of life has become something to be taught. How to eat, how to move, how to love, how to heal, how to grow, how to find purpose, and how to live.

The sheer amount of it would have been hard to imagine a generation ago. What once took years of searching now answers in seconds.

And inside all that abundance, something within begins to happen.

A question comes up, and almost immediately our attention turns outward.

What should I do? What does this mean? Am I making the right call?

The search begins before the question has even had time to settle.

One opinion leads to another, one perspective opens onto ten more. The information keeps multiplying, while the original question sits there, untouched, underneath it all.

Sometimes an outside view does bring clarity. Sometimes it shows us something we'd never have seen alone. But there are also times when no amount of new information moves us any closer to knowing.

The relationship is still ours, the choice is still ours, the experience is still our own.

Sometimes answers don't arrive in solitude; they emerge in conversation.

A trusted friend asks about the situation, and we start speaking it aloud, telling the story from the beginning. And somewhere in the telling, something becomes clear.

Not because they handed us an opinion, but because we were given the space to hear our own voice and perspective more clearly.

Information will keep expanding, while new perspectives will keep arriving, and there will always be one more answer waiting somewhere.

But some questions stay closest to the person actually living them.

So after the podcasts have been listened to, the conversations have been had, and the opinions weighed, attention finally begins to settle.

Back into the relationship, back into the decision, back into the experience itself.

Because others can offer a view, but no one else can stand where we stand inside a life. Some things can only be understood from the inside.

Maybe that's why, surrounded by so much guidance, there's still something worth protecting in sitting with a question before reaching for an answer.

Sometimes what we're looking for isn't another perspective; it's the space to hear our own.
